Thank you for visiting Music Theory Resources. The links below will take you directly to the features on this website. We hope you find the features of this site useful. Let us know what you think.

First Aid for Struggling Students

This is a tutorial that offers the basic concepts of music theory, presented in clear language. The essential knowledge can be found here, in a quick-read, readily accessible format.

Music Theory Index

The Music Theory Index is a database of articles in the major theory periodicals. You may search the database by keyword in title, composer, composition, subject, or author.  Journals Indexed: Music Theory Spectrum (all), Journal of Music Theory (1970-present), Integral (all), Indiana Theory Review (all), Music Analysis (all), and  Perspectives of New Music (1990-present), Theory and Practice (all).

Electronic Journal of Music Theory and Analysis

The journal seeks to make the most of the dynamic nature of the internet. Here, you will read articles about all aspects of music theory and you will have the opportunity to respond to the articles immediately, or to join a continuing discussion.  This reader response mechanism allows us to publish research that might not be accepted in the major theory journals: the Electronic Journal serves as a forum for new ideas to be defended or refuted.

Music Theory Forum

The place for discussion of current articles in the Electronic Journal and other current research in music theory.

Instructional Papers

The Instructional Papers begin where the First Aid tutorial leaves off.  These papers provide greater detail on each subject, with suggestions for further study, more detailed examples, and a format designed to instruct, as well as inform. We hope that graduate students wishing to publish will write these papers and submit them to MTR. Currently, there are no papers available in this feature.
